Wisdom tooth removal is a common procedure performed to alleviate pain or prevent complications associated with these teeth.

We get asked a lot of questions about AFTER the surgery. So to make things easier, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about wisdom teeth removal aftercare.

We have grouped the questions together in different categories:

  • Eating and drinking
  • Lifestyle
  • Recovery
  • Aftercare

Let’s get to it!

Eating and Drinking After Wisdom Teeth Removal

1. How long after wisdom teeth removal can I eat?

You can start with liquids and soft foods a few hours after your procedure. Avoid hot and spicy foods, as they can irritate the surgical site and delay healing.

2. What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?

Stick to a soft food diet, especially in the first few days. Some gentle, oral surgery-friendly foods include:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Applesauce
  • Yogurt
  • Pudding
  • Smoothies (no straw, to avoid dry socket)

3. When can I eat solid food again?

Most patients can start reintroducing soft solids, like cooked vegetables and pasta, 5-7 days after surgery. Wait at least two weeks before you start eating crunchy foods like chips or nuts.

4. How long after wisdom teeth removal can I eat a burger?

You might be able to handle a burger around 1-2 weeks post-surgery, depending on your healing process. Be sure to chew carefully to avoid putting pressure on the extraction sites.

5. When can I eat chips after wisdom teeth removal?

Chips are crunchy and can disrupt blood clots. Wait until at least two weeks, once the healing process is well underway.

6. When can I eat spicy food again?

It is best to avoid spicy foods for at least a week, as they can irritate the gum tissue and delay healing.

7. Can I drink soda after wisdom teeth removal?

Soda should be avoided for at least 24–48 hours after surgery, as the carbonation and acidity can irritate the extraction sites.

Lifestyle and Activities Post-Surgery

8. When is it safe to drink alcohol after wisdom teeth removal?

Hold off on alcohol for 7–10 days. Pain medication and alcohol are a deadly combination. If you were prescribed pain medication, wait until you are finished taking them before you drink alcohol.

9. How long after wisdom teeth removal can I smoke or vape?

Smoking or vaping increases the risk of infection and developing a dry socket. Ideally, you should avoid smoking and vaping for two weeks.

10. When can I return to normal activities?

Most people can resume light activities within a day or two, but avoid strenuous activity for at least a week to prevent disturbing blood clots in the extraction sites.

Recovery Timeline and Tips

11. How long does it take to recover from wisdom teeth removal?

Recovery time varies, but most people feel back to normal within a week. Full healing of the jawbone may take a few weeks to a month.

12. Why is my face bruised after surgery?

Bruising is a common response to oral surgery. It occurs as blood vessels are disrupted during tooth extraction, causing discoloration. It should fade within a week.

13. How can I reduce swelling?

Applying ice packs during the first 24 hours can help reduce swelling. Switch to warm, moist heat after 48 hours to ease discomfort and improve circulation.

14. How long does it take for swelling to go down?

Swelling usually peaks at 48 hours after surgery and then gradually decreases over the next few days.

15. When should I switch to using heat?

After the first 48 hours, switching to warm compresses can help reduce residual swelling and soothe jaw stiffness.

16. Can I use a straw after wisdom teeth removal?

Avoid using straws for at least a week, as the suction can dislodge the blood clots, leading to dry socket.

17. What is the best way to sleep after wisdom teeth removal?

Sleeping with your head elevated helps minimize swelling and reduces blood flow to the extraction sites, aiding recovery.

Aftercare for a Speedy Recovery

18. How long should I keep gauze in after wisdom teeth removal?

Keep the gauze in place for about 30-45 minutes post-surgery, or until the bleeding has slowed. Replace it with a fresh piece as needed.

19. How do I brush my teeth after wisdom teeth removal?

Good oral hygiene will reduce the risk of infection. Gently brush your teeth with toothpaste, being careful around the surgical sites. Gently rinse the mouth, being careful not to swish vigorously.

20. When can I spit after wisdom teeth removal?

Spitting should be avoided for at least 24 hours to prevent disturbing the blood clots. Instead, gently let liquids fall out of your mouth when rinsing.

21. How often should I use salt water rinses?

You can start using salt water rinses 6 hours after surgery. After that period of time as passed, you can gently rinse with salt water 4-5 times a day, especially after eating.
