What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, is a safe and gentle option for patients who experience fear and anxiety when visiting the dentist. It is also helpful if you are someone with a sensitive gag reflex.
The sedative medication helps you feel relaxed for the duration of the procedure. Your level of awareness will depend on the type of medication used. General anesthesia renders you unconscious, while IV sedation (deep sedation) puts you in a dream-like state.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for Me?
If the idea of a dental treatment makes you anxious, you may want to consider sedation dentistry.
Whether you have a phobia or other concerns, allowing your oral surgeon to sedate you can ease your stress by making your dental treatment faster and more efficient.
Discuss sedation dentistry with your surgeon if you experience any of the following issues:
- Fear of dentists
- Low pain tolerance
- Sensitive teeth
- Strong gag reflex that affects dental treatment
- Have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time
Sedation is also helpful if you have to complete multiple treatments at once or need a complex procedure.
Why See an Oral Surgeon for Sedation Dentistry?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained in providing all levels of sedation and anesthesia for dental procedures.
To administer general anesthesia in the office, oral surgeons must complete at least five months of anesthesia training.
After they have received their training, a state dental board-appointed examiner conducts an in-office evaluation during an actual surgical procedure. They inspect monitoring devices and emergency equipment, and test the staff on handling anesthesia-related emergencies.
Dr. Kesecker has completed this evaluation process and is a licensed state examiner. The license is renewed every two years as long as the doctor maintains the required amount of anesthesia-related continuing education.
Forms of Sedation Dentistry
We offer several types of sedation depending on your level of anxiety and the procedure being performed:
- Local anesthesia: Administered with a very small needle into the gum tissue. The anesthetic works very quickly and blocks any pain sensation. This does not affect your level of consciousness.
- Nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas): Inhaled through a mask placed over the nose and can provide a sense of relaxation and mild sedation. You will remain awake and able to respond to your dentist. The effects wear off as soon as the mask is removed. There are usually no residual effects, so you will be able to drive after the appointment.
- Oral conscious sedation: Oral sedation is considered minimal sedation. It involves taking oral medications about an hour before your dental procedure. This type of sedation makes you feel drowsy and relaxed, yet you will still be awake and able to respond to instructions. Its effects can last a few hours, so you will need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
- Intravenous sedation (IV sedation): This is often referred to as ‘twilight sleep’ because it puts you in a dream-like state. The sedation is administered through a vein in your arm. IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation compared to oral sedation. You will remain mostly awake but deeply relaxed. Most people do not remember much of the procedure. Due to its strong effects, you will need a driver to take you home afterward.
- General anesthesia: General anesthesia renders you completely unconscious and is administered through a combination of IV medications and inhaled gases. It is often used for complex dental procedures or extreme dental anxiety. Under general anesthesia, you will be in a sleep-like state for the entire surgery and will not recall any part of the procedure. You will remain in a recovery room until the effects have worn off. You will need someone to drop you off and pick you up as you will not be able to drive.
Before Sedation
You will have a consultation with our treatment coordinator and the oral surgeon. We will review your medical history and discuss any medications you are currently using.
It’s essential to give accurate information about any medical conditions or allergies you have and any medications you take regularly.
We will provide you instructions on how to prepare for your appointment.
The Side Effects of Sedation Dentistry
As with any medical procedure, there are certain risks that patients should know.
While sedation is generally safe when administered by oral surgeons, it is important to understand these potential risks to make an informed decision.
Some of the risks associated with sedation dentistry include:
- Upset stomach or vomiting
- Headache or dizziness
- Dry mouth or throat irritation
- Allergic reaction to medication
- Bruising or soreness at the injection site
