When Can I Drink Alcohol After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

After wisdom tooth extraction, patients often wonder when it is safe to resume normal activities, including drinking alcohol. While alcohol may seem harmless, it can affect healing, increase irritation at the surgical sites, and interact with certain medications used during recovery.

Legacy Surgery offers wisdom tooth removal in Harrisonburg and Staunton, VA.

How Long Should You Avoid Alcohol After Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

The early recovery period after wisdom tooth extraction is when the surgical sites are most vulnerable to bleeding and complications. Alcohol should be avoided for at least 72 hours after wisdom tooth removal.

In some cases, we may recommend waiting closer to 5 to 7 days, especially after more complex extractions. Patients who had sedation, multiple extractions, bone removal, or impacted lower molars removed may require a longer recovery period.

Alcohol should also be avoided while taking prescription pain medication, antibiotics, or other medications unless you are advised otherwise.

How Alcohol Can Affect Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Recovery after wisdom tooth extraction depends heavily on the formation of a stable blood clot and the gradual repair of surrounding tissues. Alcohol can interfere with several parts of this process.

Blood Clot Stability

After a wisdom tooth is removed, a blood clot forms within the empty socket and helps protect the surgical site while healing begins. Alcohol may increase bleeding and make this clot less stable during the early recovery period.

Dry Socket Risk

Dry socket is one of the most common complications after wisdom tooth extraction. It develops when the protective blood clot is lost before the extraction site has healed sufficiently, leaving the surgical area vulnerable and delaying normal healing.

Medication Interactions

Many patients receive pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, antibiotics, or sedation medications after surgery.

Alcohol can interact with these medications and may increase:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Bleeding risk
  • Liver strain
  • Sedation effects

Alcohol should never be combined with narcotic pain medication. Any concerns about medication interactions should be discussed with your dentist or pharmacist.

Increased Irritation During Healing

Extraction sites are still considered open wounds during the early recovery period. Alcohol may irritate tissues and contribute to discomfort, especially when swelling or inflammation is still present.

FAQs

Can I drink beer after wisdom tooth removal?

Beer is still considered alcohol and is generally avoided during the first several days after surgery, especially while the extraction sites are healing.

What happens if you drink alcohol after getting wisdom teeth pulled?

Drinking alcohol too soon after wisdom tooth extraction may increase irritation, interfere with certain medications, and potentially affect early healing. If you accidentally consume alcohol, monitor for increased bleeding, swelling, pain, or other unusual symptoms and contact your oral surgeon if concerns arise.

Can I drink a little alcohol after surgery?

Even small amounts of alcohol are generally discouraged during the first several days after wisdom tooth extraction. Following your oral surgeon’s instructions and waiting until the recommended recovery period has passed helps reduce the risk of complications.

Should you avoid alcohol-based mouthwash after wisdom tooth extraction?

Yes. Alcohol-based mouthwash may irritate healing surgical sites during the early recovery period. We recommend gentle salt water rinses instead during the first several days after surgery.
