How to Sleep After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Getting a good night’s sleep after wisdom teeth removal can be challenging, especially during the first few days. Sleeping in the right position can help reduce swelling, protect the surgical sites, and make your recovery more comfortable.

What Is the Best Way to Sleep After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

During the first 48 to 72 hours after wisdom teeth removal, it is best to sleep on your back with your head elevated above your heart. Keeping your head elevated helps minimize swelling and reduces pressure around the surgical sites. Using two pillows or sleeping in a recliner can help maintain this position throughout the night.

Why Sleeping Position Matters

The first few days after surgery are an important part of the healing process. Sleeping with your head elevated encourages fluid to drain away from the surgical sites, which can help reduce swelling and improve comfort.

Sleeping flat or on your side too soon may increase swelling or place unnecessary pressure on your cheeks and jaw.

Tips for Sleeping Comfortably After Wisdom Teeth Removal

The first few nights after surgery are often the most uncomfortable. Following your post-operative instructions and preparing for bedtime can make it easier to get the rest your body needs to heal.

  • Take your prescribed or recommended pain medication before going to bed as directed by your oral surgeon.
  • Apply ice packs during the first 24 hours to help minimize swelling before bedtime.
  • Eat a soft meal a few hours before going to sleep so you are comfortable throughout the night.
  • Stay well hydrated during the day.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and use extra pillows to help support your head and neck.
  • Follow all post-operative instructions provided by your oral surgeon.

When Can You Sleep on Your Side?

Most patients can return to sleeping on their side after the first few days, once swelling has started to improve and sleeping in that position is comfortable.

If you normally sleep on your side and find it difficult to fall asleep on your back, do your best to keep your head elevated and avoid putting direct pressure on the side of your face where the teeth were removed. Using extra pillows or a wedge pillow may help you stay in a more comfortable position. Getting adequate sleep is an important part of the healing process, so if you accidentally roll onto your side during the night, simply reposition yourself when you wake up.

FAQs

How many nights should I sleep with my head elevated after wisdom teeth removal?

We recommend keeping your head elevated for the first two to three nights after surgery. If swelling persists, continuing to sleep with your head elevated may help improve comfort.

Can I sleep on my stomach after wisdom teeth removal?

It is best to avoid sleeping on your stomach during the first several days because it can place pressure on your face and may increase swelling.

Is it normal to wake up with more swelling after wisdom teeth removal?

Yes. Mild swelling often peaks between 48 and 72 hours after surgery and may be more noticeable when you first wake up. Keeping your head elevated while sleeping can help reduce overnight swelling.

When can I sleep normally again after wisdom teeth removal?

Most patients can gradually return to their usual sleeping position once swelling has improved. Follow your oral surgeon’s instructions, as recovery times vary depending on the complexity of the extraction.
