If you are feeling pressure, soreness, or swelling behind your back teeth, your wisdom teeth may be starting to come in. These symptoms often show up before the teeth fully break through the gums.

Legacy Surgery offers dental implants in Harrisonburg and Staunton, VA.

6 Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Are Coming In

As wisdom teeth begin to develop and move into position, they often cause noticeable symptoms in the back of the mouth. These signs may appear before the teeth fully break through the gums and can gradually become more noticeable over time.

Six common signs your wisdom teeth are coming in include:

  1. A steady ache or pressure in the back of the jaw
  2. Swelling or tenderness in the gums behind the second molars
  3. Red or irritated gum tissue in that area
  4. Pain when chewing or biting down
  5. Jaw stiffness or tightness
  6. Occasional headaches linked to jaw pressure

Some people also notice a small portion of the tooth coming through the gum. If the tooth stays trapped under the surface, the pain may feel deeper and more constant.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Come In?

Most people get wisdom teeth between ages 17 and 25. This is the stage when the final set of molars begins to develop and move into position.

Because these teeth come in last, there is often not enough space in the jaw. That is why many wisdom teeth:

  • Come in at an angle
  • Only partially break through the gums
  • Stay stuck under the gum or bone

Even if there is no pain at first, their position still needs to be monitored.

What Causes Wisdom Tooth Pain?

Wisdom tooth pain usually happens because the tooth does not have enough room to come in normally or it is coming in the wrong direction.

In many cases, the tooth pushes against nearby teeth or bone, which creates pressure that builds over time. When a wisdom tooth only partially breaks through the gum, the surrounding tissue can become irritated and trap debris, leading to inflammation and soreness.

How To Manage Wisdom Tooth Pain

Mild wisdom tooth discomfort can sometimes be managed at home while you monitor your symptoms. These steps may help reduce irritation and pressure:

  • Rinse with warm salt water to help reduce inflammation and keep the area clean
  • Use over the counter pain relievers as directed to manage discomfort
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that may irritate the area
  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth to reduce pressure
  • Keep the area clean with gentle brushing around the back molars

If pain continues, worsens, or is accompanied by swelling or difficulty opening your mouth, an evaluation may be recommended to determine whether removal is necessary.

When To See An Oral Surgeon

You should not ignore wisdom tooth symptoms if they continue or intensify. Some cases require removal to prevent complications.

Schedule an evaluation with an oral surgeon if you notice:

  • Ongoing or worsening pain
  • Swelling in the gums or jaw
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Bad taste or drainage near the area
  • Pressure affecting nearby teeth

An exam and imaging help determine whether the tooth can come in normally or if removal is the safer option.

FAQs

Can wisdom teeth grow in sideways?

Wisdom teeth often grow at an angle due to limited space, which can cause them to press against nearby teeth or remain trapped under the gum.

Is it normal for only one wisdom tooth to hurt?

Each wisdom tooth develops independently, so one may cause symptoms while others remain quiet.

Can wisdom teeth affect your other teeth?

If there is not enough space, they can push against nearby molars and contribute to crowding or shifting.

Do wisdom teeth always break through the gums?

Some remain fully impacted under the gum or bone and never become visible without imaging.
